For this easy to make battlemat you need:
painter shielding/cover fleece (100cm x 100cm)
mixing color (black)
900ml acrylic sealant
notched trowel
rubber trowel
latex gloves
mixing bowl
decoration sand
railroad model gravel
sieve with different mesh sizes
First you have to put all 900ml acrylic sealent in the bowl and mix the acrylic sealant with the color.
You have to be careful not to use too much of the black. I wanted a grey, not pitchblack underground. With a little water and manual mixing power, the result was a grey goo.
Now you use the notched trowel to distribute the goo on the fleece.
After that you use the rubber trowel to smooths the surface.
Now you have to scatter and disperse the gravel and sand on the surface with hand and/or a sieve. You can experiment freely.
Finally we have a post-apocalyptic battlemat. Wait for 3 to 4 days for drying and then drybrush it.
I will update in a few days...
Update:
Now the acrylic sealant is dry and evaporated.
You have to pat and shake off the loose stones and sand in order to paint / drybrush the mat. I used ordinary acrylic based mixing colors in white, black and brown.
With a broad brush you can experiment how much paint you use. I mixed the white and black to a bright grey, and later with brown to get the sand effect.
The final result and my first selfmade battlemat is ready for action:
